Enhancing education with cutting-edge technology : establish an innovative information infrastructure and integrated interface.

1. Building from strength to strength
IT implementation has been a key step for Korea’s colleges in helping students maximise learning
opportunities. However, while most colleges have adopted IT systems of their own, problems with dual
operations and system maintenance have meant that, despite their IT investments, many still face obstacles
in providing efficient administrative functions and accurate data retrieval to cope with the rising demands of students and staff. It has managed to overcome these challenges by ensuring that its IT infrastructure is both scalable and agile enough to cope with the changing needs of the future. Building on this solid foundation, It endeavoured to establish an innovative College Portal Integrated Information System based on the web environment.

2. Taking access, support and integration to the next level
The primary objectives of the project were to streamline various academic processes and provide an efficient
information network that would be available round-the-clock. Professor of the School of Computer Information and Technology, says, “We needed to develop an optimal college portal system allowing all college members access anytime and anywhere.” He added, “We embarked on this project to support academic and administrative staff with efficient education, administration and research processes and offer students a range of excellent integrated services.” In order to create this new IT platform, It needed a new environment which ensured user service, data stability, and wired/wireless services by improving both server and network capabilities. A software interface solution was also required to facilitate mission critical operational processes across the campus with minimised downtime.

3. Why HP?
To ensure the success of such a complicated project, finding the right IT provider was absolutely essential.
It needed a partner that would ensure a smooth implementation process and yet deliver the technology that would help them meet all the objectives they had set. To that end, a Portal Planning Committee was formed and appointed to evaluate operational systems, solution packages, and hardware systems. This included drawing up a detailed plan, establishing criteria for technological evaluation and going through a business, management and technology (BMT) process. After this long and cautious evaluation, He ultimately selected HP because of its superior consulting and implementation abilities.

4. An all-encompassing solution
Having chosen HP Superdome servers, HP and he set about implementing an improved IT infrastructure that would be reliable, accessible and versatile. They focused first on establishing an efficient environment for data processing using HP and high-volume storage applications. An uninterruptible power supply system was also set up through DBMS dualisation and a new monitoring system built with OpenView technology. With these enhancements, He now had real-time countermeasures in place for all network systems. Another key set of priorities was enabling high-speed Internet access, ensuring high security and creating a mobile campus. With HP’s help, a high-speed Internet network was set up by combining Metro Ethernet 155Mbps with Gigabit while a wireless network helped realise a truly mobile campus. Information on both these networks was secured by a firewall and an Intrusion Prevention System. In the implementation of the portal system proper, HP helped him create its own cyberspace  which would allow web surfing and deliver one-stop academic services quickly and conveniently. In addition, operational communication was also expedited with web-mail and messenger services while cyberspace options were increased with the addition of blogs, online communities, personal homepages and e-learning sites.

5. Fostering a dynamic learning environment
whole implementation process took just 22 months and with the new College Portal Integrated Information System in place, He acquired an integrated system built on cutting-edge technology. The college’s education, research and administration processes now enjoy comprehensive IT support resulting in higher efficiency and an excellent level of reliability. Above all, this innovative project has allowed him to further enhance the learning experiences of its students. By making information both accessible and secure, pro-activeness between college students has been encouraged, resulting in a dynamic learning environment where thoughts and ideas flow freely. For an institute that embraces change and is devoted to constant innovation, this surely bodes well for the future.
